Definition of Life

In his book "Artificial Life", Steven Levy writes that the scientific community has not agreed yet how life should be actually defined. A suggestion: Life can be defined as a state that can be terminated by death in an irreversible fashion. So a machine that can be damaged but repaired and which works again after being repaired is not necessarily alive while creatures are.
